My friend Nicoletta Torriti and me.                                                                               “Nonna” Gerardina Cabot.

My passion for all things Italian started decades ago when I married into an Italian family from New Jersey.  My husband’s father immigrated from a small fishing village called Vieste when he was 8 years old.  My mother-in-law’s parents both came from small towns near Naples and raised her and 5 siblings in Newark, New Jersey.  My mother-in-law, Gerardina (named after saint Gerard) taught me how to make pasta from scratch, and all the dishes that my husband grew up on.  She would enlighten me with old Italian sayings and traditions.

I have traveled to Italy dozens of times over the last 20 years, both on my own and with family and I’m now officially in love with the country, the culture, art, wine, food, but most importantly, the people.  Like Gerardina, Italians are the warmest, most hopeful and helpful people I have ever met. Everyone I have encountered is truly an artisan in their chosen field.  Whether it is cooking, wine making, painting, or farming, Italians bring an authentic love to their work.

I have tried to recreate what I have learned on my travels in my own home.  I started a garden with the varieties of tomatoes, onions, peppers and herbs that I used in cooking dinners for friends and family in Italy.  I went to work for an Italian restaurant in my home town, bringing back recipes and products to share with our patrons.  And now I look forward to sharing all I have learned and grown to love with you.  Dolce vita!
